Why are teenagers obsessed with the colour black? It features in everything from clothes and shoes to make-up and furnishings. However my latest battle has been the purchasing of a black glitter carpet over black wooden flooring.
My daughter is going through the customary Goth stage and has managed to decorate her room with enough black to make you wish you had a flashlight every time you enter it. The arguments started when I suggested that instead of black wood flooring which she wanted we go for cheaper black vinyl flooring or black carpet tiles. The case for my side was that since black wooden flooring is so much expensive it would not be worth the money as she will probably change her mind a short time down the road and decide that she wants something else.
I then suggested that she opt for a black glitter carpet which would add a little brightness to the room but she was adamant that she only wanted plain black. In the end we managed to agree on black vinyl floor tiles since they are cheap, easy to install and durable, as well as being simple to remove and change as and when needed.
While vinyl in particular requires little maintenance, other hard floors, especially wood, can require maintenance that can be costly. Solid wood floors (not the lower maintenance laminate) sometimes require the occasional application of oils or polishes to keep the wood looking fresh and to keep it healthy and strong. Terrazzo and tile floors may need waxing to look shiny and fresh, and heaven forbid either gets cracked or scratched.
Finding a replacement tile of the same shade as the original can sometimes be impossible, and filling a crack in Terrazzo may remove the void but leave behind a patch that throws off the consistency of the colour and texture and make the floor shoddy. A tip to all buyers of tile-purchase extra tile from the same batch so as to guarantee a consistent texture and shade as the rest of the tile you intend to lay on the floor to ensure a proper match if ever you have to replace any part of the tile floor you install.
One of the main attractions of vinyl is that it is very durable which makes it great for high-traffic rooms. Another quality of vinyl flooring is that it can be made to resemble the look of other flooring types, like hardwood, stone and ceramic. You can create any style you want with vinyl. Choose black and white checkerboard for a retro feel or choose a natural look for an up-scale, classic approach.
Black vinyl floor tiles are an affordable option that offers style, durability, and long-lasting performance. When installed correctly over proper subflooring, it is extremely resistant to dents, scratches, and stains. Vinyl is easy to install yourself, and is also simple to clean and maintain. They are also a good alternative to the totally black wooden flooring that your teenager wants!
